Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system could be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
