Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Residence

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer afternoon in Keokuk, nothing feels worse than registering your HVAC isn’t working the way it should. The last thing you need to do is request HVAC repair. But your AC is an incredibly complex system, so it can be difficult to find out what’s driving the trouble solo.

That’s why WM J Kraus & Son created this guide to help you figure out what might be taking place with your home comfort system. Here, you’ll see a couple usual reasons your space is feeling a little unpleasant. And even though some of these are easy DIY tasks, you might want to find an expert for air conditioner repair.

And if you do, WM J Kraus & Son is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Keokuk.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Are Wrong

Every home adjusts their thermostat a little differently to match their personal needs. However, a number of people make the misstep of setting their device to “On” rather than “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your air conditioner will continue to blow even after you’ve reached your set temperature.

This can come off like your system is pushing out warmish air, when in fact it’s only using the fan more frequently than required. Swap this setting and determine if things seem better.

2. Your Home Comfort System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two central areas to look for dirt or dust buildup when your HVAC doesn’t appear to be performing right.

First, inspect your HVAC filter. If you don’t replace your filter on a regular basis, buildup can make it more labor intensive for air to flow through and cool down your rooms. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time for a change. (And as a rule, you have to switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter seems good, go to your outside unit. Find out if there’s a reasonable amount of room around it and clear any plants or litter close by. This section of your system releases the heat from inside your rooms. If the coils outside are closed off, you won’t be feeling comfortable inside.

We advise setting professional air conditioner maintenance annually to keep your system running properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that chills the air in your home. It moves between your internal and outside system elements to absorb and let out heat, to help your rooms remain the right temperature. If there is an opening along the way, you won’t be feeling cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a decline in chilled air, higher utility charges, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises originating from your AC.

If you think refrigerant could be leaking, call WM J Kraus & Son for air conditioner repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Have to Be Replaced

Your AC includes a a handful of essential elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is failing, your home comfort declines.

Our WM J Kraus & Son pros are well-trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you diagnose and repair any problem.

5. Your Air Conditioner Has to Be Updated

If your AC is upward of 10 years old, it may be time to think about new air conditioner installation. As your system puts on the years, it just won’t work as well as it has in the past. And it might be making your place too warm.

If your air conditioner is newer but still isn’t keeping you cool, it may be the wrong size for your living space. Air conditioners are not one-size-fits-all. A cooling system that’s not powerful enough simply can’t help a place the way a correctly sized system can.
