The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. An air conditioner or heat pump counts on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s sent back through your home. This liquid is housed within the coils of your cooling system, but one of the most common refrigerants used for a very long time – the R-22 (Freon) is now being replaced due to environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, the production of R-22 will end all together. Introducing R-410A Recognized by the EPA, R-410A is a chlorine-free and ozone-friendly refrigerant. This means it will keep your AC running cool without damaging the environment. Additionally, Lennox’s highest efficiency systems are designed to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system operate efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for dependability, quiet operation and better dehumidification, so you’ll stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At WM J Kraus & Son in Keokuk, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If your system was made before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is scarce. Some manufacturers offer alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
